These are the legendary Cwtching chairs on Rhyl beach. I can just about remember them on the pier.
These wicker chairs, along with deckchairs, were hired out be the council on the promenade and beach. It was a good summer job for anyone who required a suntan!
The Cwtching chairs were much loved by courting couples as two could be drawn together (allegedly) to create an intimate and private space for some “cwtching”!
The hundreds of wicker chairs were last seen in storage after they had been withdrawn in the late sixties. Where they went to after being in Council storage is anybody’s guess, but there is a rumour that they formed a massive bonfire and disappeared in minutes. That would be a terrible shame if it were true!
